Anubex modernises core applications of Norway's largest bank

The Belgian software modernisation experts have suceeded in modernizing and replatforming the bulk of the core information systems of DnB NOR, the largest financial services group from Norway. The project involved the migration of the legacy core applications to open systems. The move guarantees the continuity of the DnB NOR business in the face of a shrinking availability of technical expertise needed to maintain the legacy applications. The migrated applications are now live.

Anubex began the preparations for the migration in 2005, and completed the migration in three phases. As part of the modernisation, Anubex migrated ten applications, totalling over 1MLOC (one million lines of code) of COBOL. The applications managed some 80 GB of data stored in an ISAM (Index Sequential Access Method) format. Applications and data were migrated from a distributed Wang VS/IBM mainframe platform to an open and flexible Oracle RDBMS running in a distributed Solaris/IBM mainframe platform. The new applications are web enabled and execute via a Java application server.

A key component of its application modernisation offering is Anubex' own extensive set of conversion and migration tools. Complementing this set of tools are the company's two core competencies SLAM (Syntactic Language Abstraction Method) and SOAR (Snapshot-oriented Automated Reduction) that make it possible to create, customize, and implement these tools during a migration project. "SLAM and SOAR have proven their value in many migrations in the past, but their effectiveness is always shaped by the technical competence of the experts that implement them. At DnB NOR the excellence of our migration experts has been validated again," according to Louis Heymans, Managing Director of Anubex.

The DnB NOR migration took place in cooperation with the IT department of DnB NOR and some of their vendors, and the successful outcome of this project would not have been possible without the effort, expertise and smooth collaboration of all parties.
